The 2020 Explorer comes with three rows of seating and has room for up to seven people. In the back row, there are two seats, and they can come either as a manual or power-operated seats. In the middle row, captain's chairs are standard. This configuration gives you a center pass-through that enhances the spacious feel of the cabin. Alternatively, the base trim, the XLT, gives you the option to get a 40/20/40 split bench in the second row. This would be something to consider if you prefer to have seven seats and not six. In terms of seating materials, the Explorer starts out with cloth seating surfaces and gets upgraded with leather seats on the higher trims. In addition to having heated front seats, you can get heated second-row seats as well as heated steering wheel. All of these features have been designed to keep you comfortable on the road.
Moving to the outside of the SUV, it's clear that the Ford Explorer has been built to handle tough conditions. It has a rugged style, LED signature lighting, and standard roof rack side rails in case you want to strap cargo on top. If you want to take advantage of the cargo room in the back of the SUV, you'll appreciate having a power liftgate. A hands-free liftgate is available if you want that added convenience. Cargo room is a definite advantage in the Explorer, as it has 18.2 cubic feet of space behind the third row. You'll have 47.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity if you lower the third row, and folding both the second and third rows will expand cargo capacity to 87.8 cubic feet.
There's no question that the Ford Explorer is ready for adventure. As a rear-wheel drive vehicle, it's athletic and has good handling and responsiveness. You can choose to put in intelligent 4WD if you think you'll ever come across difficult conditions. If things are particularly tough, you can set the Drive Mode to Trail, Deep Snow/Sand, or Slippery to optimize performance.
The Explorer can come with one of several engines. The lower trims come with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, which has 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Some of the higher trims come with a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, which ramps up capability with 365 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Even better news for people who value performance is that the Explorer ST has a twin-turbo configuration that results in 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque.
If you get your Explorer equipped with a Class III Trailer Tow Package, you'll be able to tow up to 5,600 pounds. In this case, the Towing and Trailer Sway Control system will be useful. This system will adjust your braking and engine power so you can maintain control.
If you want your next vehicle to feature modern technology, you'll be happy to hear about what the Explorer comes with. With SYNC 3, Ford+Alexa, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, you'll always stay connected. You can access your favorite music, look up sports scores and the weather forecast, and get turn-by-turn directions all through your infotainment systems. In terms of safety, it has a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot monitoring, among other systems. These can all look out for you while you navigate busy roads and possibly find yourself in unpredictable situations. Other advanced features are available, such as Park Assist, which will help you squeeze into tight spots, and a 360-degree camera that will give you greater perspective about how close you are to other vehicles or obstacles.
